How to size your project

Transcoding is what weighs, and with no GPU it runs on the CPU: the more streams re-encoded at once, the more vCPUs. Direct play spares the CPU. Plex asks for 2 GB and calls 4 GB typically more than sufficient; at rest we measured 764 MB system-wide, with Plex at about 60 MB. Scanning a large library takes far more.

About Plex Media Server

Plex Media Server organises your libraries of films, series, music and photos and serves them to the Plex apps (TV, phone, browser) linked to your Plex account. The server holds the media and the metadata; the Plex account identifies the server and controls who gets in.

On the VPS it arrives as version 1.43.4, installed from Plex's own .deb, with updates from the official repository. The server comes unclaimed and closed: port 32400 only opens once you link it to your Plex account, with a code from plex.tv/claim pasted on a private page whose link comes in the order e-mail. Network discovery (GDM and DLNA) is off.

Two points deserve attention before ordering. Plex's terms license the server for personal, non-commercial use. And, since 2025, watching on your own devices counts as remote playback, since every stream leaves a server in a data centre: that needs a Plex Pass of your own or a Remote Watch Pass from the viewer. The media goes in a folder the plex user can read.

Ready infrastructure, with the freedom to configure your application your way.

01

With your VPS

Your chosen image installed, the plan’s resources and a panel to manage the server. Administrative access is provided after provisioning.

02

Configure for your business

The e-mail carries the private link to claim the server. Get the code at plex.tv/claim, paste it on the page and open app.plex.tv/desktop; port 32400 only opens after that. Create a folder such as /srv/media, send your media and add it as a library. A Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass, backups and updates are up to you.

03

Expand when you need to

Backups, snapshot capacity, DDoS protection, private networking and other features are available as you need them. Check prices and availability when configuring your server.

You administer the system and application, including updates and data. For help with configuration or management, talk to our team about the scope of support.
