Pick the right plan for Owncast

Every plan includes public IPv4 and IPv6, NVMe storage and a 1 Gbps uplink. Click one to reach the checkout with everything filled in.

How to size your project

The CPU is the limit: with no GPU, each video output is re-encoded by ffmpeg, and one 720p output takes about a core. The default is one 1.2 Mbps output; more outputs need more cores, and passthrough skips them. Owncast itself takes about 200 MB, and outgoing bandwidth grows with the number of viewers.

About Owncast

Owncast is a live-streaming server with chat: you broadcast from OBS (or other software) over RTMP and viewers watch on a page of its own, in the browser, with no third-party platform in between. The page, the chat and the admin panel all belong to your server.

On the VPS it arrives as version 0.3.0, with Debian 13's ffmpeg, running as a systemd service under an unprivileged user, with HTTPS from Caddy. A new Owncast accepts admin/abc123 and the stream key abc123, which are public: here both are replaced with generated values before anything is reachable, and the installer confirms that abc123 was refused. The password and the key come in the order e-mail.

In OBS, use the server rtmp://your-server:1935/live and the key you received. RTMP is not encrypted: the key is the only lock. The default is a single 1.2 Mbps x264 output; each extra output costs CPU, and passthrough skips re-encoding. Data lives in /opt/owncast/data.

Software features

  • RTMP streaming from OBS, with a viewing page and chat in the browser
  • Admin panel at /admin, login admin
  • Password and stream key replaced with generated ones before anything opens
  • Default abc123 password refused, which the installer checks
  • Debian 13's ffmpeg, with the system's security updates
  • Runs under systemd as an unprivileged user; the web port listens on 127.0.0.1 only
  • Port 1935/TCP for RTMP; 80 and 443 through the HTTPS proxy
  • Data, database and chat in /opt/owncast/data, one folder to copy
