Why choose MySQL 8.4 over 9.7?

For an application written for MySQL 8.0, or for an old client that only speaks mysql_native_password. MySQL 9 removed that plugin and the MD5(), SHA() and SHA1() functions; 8.4 still has them all. For a new project, prefer MySQL 9.7 LTS, which is maintained for longer.

How do I enable mysql_native_password for an old client?

It comes disabled, and every account uses caching_sha2_password. For a client that cannot speak that method, switch the plugin on with mysql_native_password = ON in a configuration file of your own in /etc/mysql/mysql.conf.d/, restart MySQL and create an account for that client IDENTIFIED WITH mysql_native_password. The step-by-step is in /root/mysql-8-lts.txt on the server. TLS is still required.

How do I connect to MySQL over the network?

Use port 3306 with the dbadmin account and the password from the welcome e-mail; the app database is ready for your tables. Every network connection requires TLS, so enable SSL/TLS in your client or driver (the --ssl-mode=REQUIRED option in the command-line client). The certificate is self-signed, issued for the server's hostname and IP, and can be replaced with your own.

Why does root refuse remote connections?

For security, root only signs in locally, through the socket on the server itself, and there is no root account for any network address. To administer remotely, use dbadmin, the administrator account created at installation, and give each application its own user with limited permissions.

Yes. phpMyAdmin 5.2.3 runs over HTTPS, with an automatic certificate, at the server's address. It manages this server's MySQL only and refuses root logins: sign in as dbadmin or as another user you create.

The minimum is 1 GB of RAM. For production we recommend 2 vCPUs and 4 GB of RAM. The InnoDB buffer pool is sized to the server's RAM at installation; if you move to a larger plan later, raise innodb_buffer_pool_size to use the extra memory.

It is installed natively on Debian 13 from MySQL's official repository, pinned to the 8.4 series: patch releases arrive with a normal system update (apt), and never MySQL 9 unless you ask for it. As an LTS release, 8.4 is maintained by Oracle until April 2032. When you want to move to MySQL 9.7 LTS, export your databases with mysqldump and import them on a 9.7 server.

Use mysqldump to export your databases consistently (with --single-transaction, InnoDB tables are copied without locking the database), schedule it as often as your data requires and keep the copies off the server. The binary log is kept for 7 days, which lets you recover the database to a point in time from the last backup. Test a restore from time to time.
