In 2004, pfsense was launched, an open source firewall application, which to this day is among the most widely used in the world.
What is pfSense?
According to the creators themselves, Christopher M. Buechler and Scott Ulrich, “pfsense is a customized, free and open source distribution of the FreeBSD project designed to be used as a firewall or router, entirely managed by an easy-to-use web interface.”
FreeBSD is an open source operating system, meaning that its code is released. pfsense is an operating system based on FreeBSD. However, it is used as a firewall and router, in other words, as an open source defense system for your network.
Contrary to what some people think, the software is not installed on the desktop, it needs to be installed on an appliance, i.e. the hardware and software are pre-integrated before they reach the end consumer.
Normally, when you buy a firewall it comes with hardware, but with pfsense you can use the hardware of your choice.
