What is CAL access?
It is a license that gives the user or device the right to access the server’s services. The CAL license is required by Microsoft if the server has more than 2 RDP (Terminal Service) users.
Types of access CALs
Initially, we divided CALs into two licensing categories:
Per user: the license is associated with a user, licensing that user account independently of the client device.
Per device: the license is associated with a device, licensing that device regardless of which user is using it.
User CALs
With the user CAL, you purchase a CAL for each user who accesses the server to use services such as file storage or printing, regardless of the number of devices they use for this access. Purchasing a user CAL will make more sense if your company’s employees need roaming access to the corporate network through the use of multiple devices or unknown devices, or if you simply have more devices than users in your organization.
Device CALs
With a Device CAL, you purchase a license for each device that accesses the server, regardless of the number of users using that device. Device CALs are adopted by companies that have employees who share devices, for example, at different work times.
When is CAL access required?
If there is any system on the Windows Server server that is accessed by client equipment, and the version is Standard or Enterprise, the acquisition of CALs is mandatory; it is only important to check with the IT supplier which type and category of CAL is most suitable.
