code-server VPS

A VPS with code-server pre-installed · By Coder

Your code environment in the browser, from anywhere.

VS Code in the browser, on a server of your own: HTTPS, a generated-password login and a terminal that runs without root on the server.

  • VS Code in the browser, with an integrated terminal and extensions
  • Generated password with an argon2id hash in the config; attempts limited
  • The project lives outside the container and survives an image update

Pick the right plan for code-server

Every plan includes public IPv4 and IPv6, NVMe storage and a 1 Gbps uplink. Click one to reach the checkout with everything filled in.

How to size your project

We measured about 500 MB in use after one session, before any build. The project's 1 GB floor leaves no room for a language server, so the minimum here is 2 GB. Load grows with the size of the project, the extensions and what you compile or run in the terminal; for several languages or heavy builds, use 4 GB or more.

How to order code-server

  1. Pick a plan

vCPU, memory and disk sized for your project. You can grow it later without reinstalling.

  2. Confirm the order

Pix, bank slip or card. Nothing is charged until you confirm, and you have a 7-day guarantee.

  3. code-server ready in minutes

The server comes up with code-server installed and configured. Access details appear in the panel.

What to use a code-server VPS for

Some of the most common uses. The server is yours — run whatever you like on it.

  • Code from a tablet or a modest laptop, with the environment running on the server
  • Have the same development environment on any machine, with nothing installed on it
  • Edit files and run commands in a project hosted on the server, straight from the browser
  • Run heavy builds and tests on the server instead of on the laptop

About code-server

code-server is VS Code running on a server and used from the browser: the editor, the integrated terminal and the extensions live on the remote machine, and you code from any computer or tablet without installing anything locally. Coder maintains it.

At Master da Web it arrives as version 4.138.0 behind HTTPS, with a generated password stored in the configuration only as an argon2id hash. The editor runs as the unprivileged user coder, inside a container with no access to the Docker socket: sudo exists only within the container, not on the server. The project opens at /home/coder/project, which is /opt/code-server/data/project on the server.

Tools installed with apt in the terminal last until the container is recreated; the project, settings and extensions are kept. To change the password, generate another hash and restart the service. Your own domain and the languages you use are yours to set up.

Software features

  • code-server 4.138.0: VS Code in the browser, over HTTPS with websockets
  • Generated-password login, kept only as an argon2id hash in the configuration
  • Editor without root on the server: user coder in a container, no Docker socket
  • Integrated terminal in the container, with sudo limited to it for installing tools
  • Project in /opt/code-server/data/project, outside the container and kept on updates
  • Settings, extensions and shell history in a Docker volume
  • Telemetry off and login attempts limited by code-server itself
  • Upgrade by changing the image tag in the compose file

What your code-server gets at Master da Web

Manage infrastructure from one panel: security, recovery, connectivity and growth. Check prices and availability when configuring your server.

  • Snapshots

Take a snapshot of code-server before a risky update and roll back to it with one click, without reinstalling anything.

  • Automatic backups

Scheduled copies of the whole server, kept off the host. Restore the complete code-server whenever you need to.

  • Managed firewall

Rules by port and source, applied from the panel, no iptables editing. Open only what code-server needs.

  • Security Center

Continuous external scanning of your server, with findings prioritised and the fix spelled out for each one.

  • Private network (VPC)

Connect code-server to databases and other servers over an isolated network with nothing exposed to the internet. With a VPN Gateway for remote access.

    About the VPC →

  • DDoS protection

Volumetric attack mitigation for your code-server server. Check protection options and prices when ordering.

  • Grow without reinstalling

Add vCPU, memory and disk from the panel and pay only the difference, and code-server stays exactly as it is.

  • API and MCP for automation

Create, resize and manage servers through the public API — or straight from an AI assistant, over MCP.

Ready infrastructure, with the freedom to configure your application your way.

01

With your VPS

Your chosen image installed, the plan’s resources and a panel to manage the server. Administrative access is provided after provisioning.

02

Configure for your business

The e-mail carries the editor's address and the generated password; there is no username. After sign-in the editor opens the folder /home/coder/project, which is /opt/code-server/data/project on the server. The terminal runs as the user coder, inside the container. Languages, tools, your own domain and the project's backup are yours to handle.

03

Expand when you need to

Backups, snapshot capacity, DDoS protection, private networking and other features are available as you need them. Check prices and availability when configuring your server.

You administer the system and application, including updates and data. For help with configuration or management, talk to our team about the scope of support.
