A Window to Linux on Your Windows PC!
Have you heard about Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)? If not, get ready for an exciting journey that makes it possible to run a Linux environment on your Windows computer, without the need for complicated virtual machines or dual boots. WSL was created to provide a fluid and productive experience for developers who want to enjoy the best of both worlds: Windows and Linux, side by side.
What is WSL2?
WSL2 is the evolution of Windows Subsystem for Linux. Imagine using virtualization technology to run a Linux kernel inside a lightweight and efficient virtual machine. Linux distributions run as if they were isolated containers, sharing resources but maintaining their individuality. WSL2 significantly improves file system performance and offers full compatibility with system calls, surpassing the WSL1 architecture.
How to install WSL2?
Installing WSL2 is easy! Just follow these simple steps:
- Check whether you are using Windows Server 2019 (version 1709) or Windows Server 2022.
- Activate the Windows Subsystem for Linux feature.
- Install with the command “wsl –install”
- Update WSL with the command “wsl –update”
- Install the Linux distribution of your choice using “wsl –name-of-distro”
- Simple, easy and fast.
If you want to know which distributions are available, just use the command “wsl –list –online”
It’s worth mentioning that we’ll have a video on how to install WSL on our VPS.
Once you’ve installed WSL2, you’re faced with a whole new world. Run Linux commands and applications in the Windows terminal. Access your Windows files in the Linux terminal, and vice versa. Surprisingly, WSL2 even supports running Linux graphics applications integrated directly into your Windows desktop.
