SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security) are security protocols used to protect communication between a client and a server on the Internet. They are used to ensure that communication is encrypted and secure, thus protecting the confidential data transmitted between the two points.

SSL was developed by Netscape in 1994 and has been widely used around the world to provide an additional layer of security for websites. However, over time, new vulnerabilities were discovered in SSL, leading to the development of TLS.

TLS was developed jointly by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) and Netscape in 1999 as an evolution of SSL. It is designed to be more secure than SSL, incorporating fixes for SSL vulnerabilities and adding new security features.

Although SSL is still used on some websites, TLS is now widely used as the standard protocol for securing communication on the internet. TLS is used in many different applications, including web browsing, e-mail, instant messaging and much more.

The process of establishing an SSL/TLS connection is known as “handshake”. During the handshake, the server and client exchange information to determine the level of security that will be used in the communication. This includes things like the type of encryption to be used, server and client authentication and other security settings.

SSL/TLS encryption works through the use of digital certificates. These certificates are issued by trusted certification authorities and are used to authenticate the server’s identity. Digital certificates contain information about the server’s identity, such as the domain name, public key and other identifying information.

In short, SSL and TLS are crucial security protocols that protect communication between a client and a server on the Internet. Although SSL is still used on some sites, TLS is now the standard protocol and is widely used in many different applications. Through the use of digital certificates and encryption, these protocols help to ensure that communication on the internet is secure and confidential.
