In a world where virtualization has become a cornerstone of IT operations, benchmarks play a crucial role for companies using virtual servers. In this post, we’ll explore what benchmarking is and why it’s so essential for optimizing the performance and efficiency of virtual servers, as well as bringing you a test carried out on our servers as an example.

What is Benchmarking?

Benchmarking is the process of measuring and comparing the performance of a system or component with a known standard or with similar systems. In the context of servers, this involves testing various metrics such as processing speed, network bandwidth, storage capacity and latency.

The Importance of Benchmarking for Virtual Servers

  1. Accurate Performance Evaluation: Benchmarks allow you to accurately evaluate the performance of your virtual servers. This is essential to determine whether they are meeting the demands of your workloads.
  2. Resource optimization: By analyzing benchmark results, you can identify whether resources are being allocated efficiently. This helps to avoid oversizing or undersizing virtual servers, optimizing costs.
  3. Identifying bottlenecks: Benchmarking reveals performance bottlenecks that may be limiting your operations. This enables you to take action to resolve these problems before they cause disruption.
  4. Appropriate sizing: As your company’s needs evolve, benchmarks provide essential information for the appropriate sizing of virtual servers. This helps to ensure that you have enough capacity to cope with growth.
  5. Energy Efficiency: Well-tuned virtual servers consume less energy, which is beneficial for the environment and reduces operating costs.
  6. Continuous Improvement: Benchmarking is not a one-off task. It is an ongoing process that allows you to monitor performance over time and implement improvements as necessary.
  7. Decision-making: Based on benchmarking data, you can make informed decisions about the configuration, virtualization and migration of virtual servers.

Benchmarking tests

To exemplify the information given in the post, we used one of our VPS services to carry out the benchmarking test. We used UserBenckmark and CPU-Z (both free) for our tests.

Below are the results of our tests:

Userbenchmark

UserBenchmark is a Windows program available for free to report the performance of the user’s computer compared to other machines of the same model. UserBenchmark also diagnoses which hardware may be responsible for the machine’s below-average performance.

CPU-Z

CPU-Z is a tool that provides detailed information about your current operating system. This package can be extremely useful when troubleshooting potential problems, as well as when the user needs to determine which version of the operating system is present before downloading a specific program.

The program offers technical information relating to the processor including name and supplier, main stages and processing. It also shows the package clock multiplier and partial overclock detection, as well as internal and external clocks. Some of the metrics highlighted include the type of CPU and its processing power, the number of cores, the architecture, the clock speed and the GPU details.

In an environment where virtualization plays a crucial role in IT operations, benchmarking is an indispensable tool. It helps ensure that your virtual servers operate efficiently, meet the demands of your workloads and are scalable for future growth. In a world where performance and efficiency are paramount, benchmarking is the key to optimizing your virtual server infrastructure. So don’t underestimate its importance and make benchmarking an essential part of your virtual server management strategy.
