We would like to clarify and explain a little about the subject of “Internet routing problems”. Sometimes we hear reports of some customers having problems accessing their VPSs or sites that are located on Master Da Web, the reports are that from some locations they access and from others they do not, or from a certain provider they access and from another Internet provider they do not.

It is important to emphasize that when this type of situation occurs, it is not a problem related to Master Da Web’s services, and this type of problem is not under our administration, so in this case there is nothing we can do but advise our customers about it.

But what is a route problem anyway?

First we need to understand how the Internet works, the Internet is a collection of computer networks that connect to each other, these networks can be companies or Internet providers, Internet providers connect to each other one providing Internet access to the other, and so on until we have a large connection of networks between various providers interconnecting the whole world, as if it were a large spider web, this forms the great “world wide web”, in this way communication between different locations around the world becomes possible.

For communication to get from one point to another, it will pass through several different internet providers. When a provider has a problem and its link goes down, this communication is interrupted, and the path to reach a destination is compromised, this is when the “route problem” occurs.

In this case, there’s nothing we can do, because the administration of the downed link doesn’t belong to Master Da Web, it belongs to any provider that is in the middle of this communication, or it could even be your own internet provider. The recommendation is that you contact your Internet provider and tell them that you are having problems connecting to your destination, whether it’s a VPS or a website, in which case, if the problem isn’t directly with your provider, they will contact their provider to investigate the problem, and so on until the point of failure is identified so that a repair can be carried out.

To identify a routing problem we normally use the MTR tool, which is a software tool that traces the route from the origin to the destination, and if there is a routing problem with this tool we can identify exactly the point where it has fallen, thus arriving at the diagnosis. If you want to learn how to test with the MTR tool, check out our video tutorial below, which is available on our YouTube channel.

I hope I’ve been able to clearly explain and pass on the information about route problems so that you can identify them if they occur.
