Using the remote connection for audio playback / recording requires a few configuration steps, both on the RDP client and on the remote server. In this tutorial I’ll teach you how to make Windows Server play and record audio through a redirect that uses the client’s audio card.

Before starting this article, make sure that your local computer has the following RDP settings:

Activating audio redirection and recording

First, in the run option, type “mmc.exe”.

A Console screen will be displayed. In the“file” tab, select the“add snap-in” option.

Then, from the list of available snap-ins, select“Group Policy Object Editor” and click add. A new box will appear, click finish and then ok:

On the console screen, you will see various options for directives. We will access the following directives, as shown in the screen below:

Local Computer Directive > Computer Configuration

Administrative Templates > Windows Components

Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host

> Redirecting Devices and Resources

We will now enable two of the above settings:

  • Allow redirection of audio and video playback.
  • Allow audio recording redirection.

After enabling the above two settings, terminate the RDP connection and connect again.

Now you can play audio on the remote connection and make recordings using your local computer’s audio card.
